Wanted: volunteers for Incubate 2013

We are currently preparing for our upcoming festival in Septembe and volunteers are a big part of these preparations. Without them (you!) Incubate wouldn’t exist. Do you want to experience Incubate 2013 and help us making it another unforgettable edition?

We give you the opportunity to pick whatever shift you want from the list on our site. If you complete one shift you’ll get free access to everything else happening on your working day as well as a free access card to a Incubate day of your choice.  If you complete two shifts you’ll earn a passe-partout. Appealing right? Don’t hesitate to apply and become an official Incubate volunteer!

To all our international friends, unfortunately the information about the volunteer jobs is written in Dutch. If you have any questions we recommend sending an email to steph@incubate.org.

Mothers for acid + some other acid stuff!

New Post has been published on http://inlog.org/2013/06/18/mothers-for-acid-some-other-acid-stuff/

Mothers for acid + some other acid stuff!

Chriss Moss has a mother. And that mother approves of acid house. We can’t help but feel that if Chriss Moss’ mother would have been prime-minister instead of Margaret Thatcher, that the Acid House movement would have been -for better or for worse- very different.

Here is Chriss’ mom, approving of her son playing acid so implicitly, she also approves of our acid flashback event. Thanks Chriss’ mom!

High on Hope – A documentary on acid house

We got this from Incendiary Mag and it looks like a very interesting documentary on the acid house scene. A scene that changed the depressed, apathetic youth of Britain into a tight community revolving around acid house. Oh, and like we all know, the government didn’t like that.
Note: At the moment the films soundtrack rights need to be bought, so if you have some money to spare, lend them a pound or 10,000.

Motivational acid comments on youtube

And if you need some feel-good material, just read these awesome comments on acid and rave tracks on youtube. Vice collected some of these gems from comment sections, and like we all know, those places are normally crowded with the most vile and evil brainfarts ever, so it’s uplifting top read these genuinly moving stories. Read here (it’ll make your day).

Reaeaaaaalllyyy looking forward to our acid flashback evening now!

[Listen] Grumbling Fur give us a new track titled "Tilda Holds A Sword And Lilies"

[Listen] Grumbling Fur give us a new track titled “Tilda Holds A Sword And Lilies”

We just read on The Quietus that psych rockers Grumbling Fur have a new track on compilation album The Outer Church.

Here’s some excellent news for lovers of uncanny music: Joseph Stannard, the organiser of Brighton event The Outer Church, which brings together some exceedingly fine leftfield musicians and filmmakers, has announced that he’ll be releasing a 28-track double album compilation (artwork above) of previously unreleased material from TOC artists. It’s out on August 5 via Front & Follow. Read the Quietus article here.

Grumbling Fur will be playing Incubate on September 21st. Listen to ‘Tilda Holds A Sword And Lilies’ below.

[Win] 2 x 2 tickets for Warm Soda + Adam and The Relevants - 11th of July @ 013, Tilburg

We have a total man-crush on Warm Soda; like an almost schoolgirl-like infatuation with  this catchy, garage-y band from Amurricaah. We’ve even thrown away our Jonas Brothers playlist in favor of some Jeany loves Pop goodyness. Swoon.

But let’s get serious, this terrific band is playing in 013, together with Adam and the Relevants, on July 11th and we’re giving away 2 tickets so you can spend all your dolla-dolla-bills drowning this band in your money.

To win the 2 tickets you’ll need to answer the following question:

Which soda is most tasty when warm?

Send your favorite heated beverage to win@incubate.org with subjectline “WARM SODA” and don’t forget to clearly state your full name in the mail. Make sure to send it before before Tuesday, the 9th of July.

[Listen] Múm releases new single ‘Toothwheels’ for upcoming album

In exactly three months, Múm wil release their first album in four years called ‘Smilewound’. And to keep their fans satisfied, they uploaded their single and opening track ‘Toothwheels‘ on YouTube.

Múm will perform at Incubate only two days after their album release, on Thursday 19th. Ofcourse we can’t predict or have any influence on the setlist, but the odds are that you will be able to hear this song during their show. So get familiar with the (new) sound of Múm, and make sure to drop by during their performance on Incubate!

[Incubate Tips] Houten Deathfest on 28 - 29 June

[Incubate Tips] Houten Deathfest on 28 - 29 June

A good start of your week could be checking out the brutal line-up of Houten Deathfest. That should blast the weekend laziness right out of your head.

On 28 and 29 of June, Houten will be visited by 18 of the filthiest, blunt and uncompromising death metal bands around. The line-up boasts names like Internal Suffering, Begging for Incest, Putridity, Carnivore Diprosopus, Encephalopathy and Goretrade. These are perhaps not the artists you would find you mother listening to, but where would we be without some bad taste and weird humour?

So if you’re in for some slamming death metal you should order your tickets at the HDF website, and join the event on Facebook.

And if you’re still hungry for more, don’t forget that we have some great slamming death metal and grindcore at Incubate in September as well, with Katalepsy, Brutal Truth, Nunwhore Commando 666, Satan’s Revenge on Mankind and many many more.

[Listen] New Pop.1280 song - ‘Lights Out’

One of our favourite records of 2012 was The Horror by violent post-punkers Pop.1280 on the great Sacred Bones record label. And now they’ve announced a new one called, Imps of Perversion, which hints at the fact that they probably still have the same bleak and harsh points of view.

The first thing you can hear of their new album is ‘Lights Out’, which they just put online (only 87 views as I’m typing this.). Get that violence out of your body before the weekend starts:

Discover Incubate artists through music here

We know that we have a lot of artists to choose from at Incubate. And if you don’t have time to spend all weekend long browsing the Incubate website, but want to know what Incubate has to offer, musically speaking, perhaps just putting on music is a good idea.

We’ve made it easy for you, by starting our own Soundrop.

Basically this is like a interactive radiostation that keeps on playing good music, by artists that are in our line-up. You used to need Spotify to get acces to it, but the fine people from Soundrop have made a few alterations, so that even if you don’t have/want Spotify, you can listen to our continuous playlist.

  • Click here if you want to listen to this through your Spotify player.
  • Click here if you want to listen to this in your browser, without Spotify.

And if you come across something you like and didn’t know, don’t forget to add them to your personal Incubate agenda!

The video below is of ‘The Clumtwins’ from that EP. Wonderfully weird, the video that was animated by Niels de Haar catches the atmosphere of the track perfectly.

[Incubated] Nisennenmondai & Idiot Glee & Shigeto - June 19th

[Incubated] Nisennenmondai & Idiot Glee & Shigeto - June 19th

On Wednesday, the 19th of June, we have another exciting edition of Incubated for you! This time Nisennenmondai, Idiot Glee and Shigeto will take the stage in 013. Pre-sale will start this Saturday, the 20th of April. Tickets are €9,00 (excl. service fee) and available at the 013 Boxoffice, Free Record Shop, Sounds (Tilburg) and online via Ticketmaster.nl.

Let your friends know you are coming by attending the facebook event.

Nisennenmondai
Nisennenmondai is an instrumental and experimental no-wave/kraut-rock/japanoise/disco band… which doesn’t tell us all that much. Nisennenmondai is also three tiny Japanese ladies, who play their instruments with such fever and gusto that it makes all other musicians look like lazy slackers. A razortight and danceable mix of jamming songs, impressive guitar riffs and insane drumming (drummer Sayaka Himeno is a whirlwind of sticks and hair) make Nisennenmondai a live experience unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. They were even chosen by Battles to perform at the ATP Nightmare Before Christmas festival. Japanese Sonic Youth in female form!

Idiot Glee
Idiot Glee a.k.a. James Frily is a one-man dream-pop force who we still remember from his Incubate 2010 show, and seeing as his last album was another delight of bee-bop synths, we asked him to come back for this Incubated. Categorized as bedroom music, we can also picture ourselves listening to Idiot Glee while lounging in the pool,in the park or just about anywhere else. As long as we have Idiot Glee’s fantastic voice and synths with us, well, even the beach could be fun.

Shigeto
This electronic music producer from Detroit makes ambient glitch-hop reminiscent of Flying Lotus and Four Tet. During his Incubated show he will complement his intricate electronic sound-scapes with live drums and will close the evening after Idiot Glee and Nisennenmondai.

[Go See] Posthumous exposition of Hans Stevens' "de weg bij het een boek EN" @ Poetry International, Rotterdam

[Go See] Posthumous exposition of Hans Stevens’ “de weg bij het een boek EN” @ Poetry International, Rotterdam

Last year artist Hans Stevens graced Incubate with his presence, presenting  his life’s work ‘de weg bij het een boek EN‘ an epic, two-million pages counting piece of art, consisting of mostly poetry. Sadly, Hans passed away this January, leaving Tilburg with an empty hole that was once filled with a very special artist.

Well, if you still want to see Hans Stevens’, PHOEBUS Rotterdam is showing the massive collection of Hans Stevens poetry and art during POETRY International festival. There will also be reading of Hans Stevens work this Sunday, June 9th by Toine Horvers and G.J. de Rook. The exposition will take place from June 12th til June 19th.

This is what Hans told us last year:

“I have made an fantastic journey around this planet through the world. I designed the AND-principle. I was able to make a report of two million papers. I’ve dreamed about more musical and dimensional aspects. You will see a tiny bit of my dream. I think it is fantastic. You are welcome.”

Sadly Hans has passed away, but you can still go see a vital piece of him. Well, 2 million pieces actually.

[Incubated Film] Rami Ismail from Vlambeer is going to come talk about developing Indie Games in the Netherlands

[Incubated Film] Rami Ismail from Vlambeer is going to come talk about developing Indie Games in the Netherlands

Rami Ismail (pictured above, the guy on the right) is co-founder of Vlambeer, a Dutch indie studio responsible for the video game equivalent of crack cocaine, such as Super Crate Box and Radical (or Ridiculous on Ios) Fishing. This man has cost us -at least- a couple of weeks of our lives (which we wouldn’t trade for the world by the way) and he’s coming to Tilburg to talk about designing games in the Dutch, and International market! Tonight!

Not only have Vlambeer been bringing out some of the most addictive, and innovative arcade games of the last couple of years, they’ve been copied left and right while doing it. And if people are copying you, there’s a good chance you’re doing something right! Rami has helped develop several fantastic games and also helps other game studios with their communication and marketing.

Before we screen Indie Game: The Movie, Rami is going to come and give a small talk on the ups and downs regarding (Dutch) game design. Attend here!

Doors open at 20:00h and film starts rolling at 20:30h. Like always admittance is 0,00 euro’s. Also welcoming you to the screening will be the sound of freshly made popcorn that is also totally free.
Hall of Fame, Tilburg.

(There is construction going on around the Hall of Fame so you’ll need to take a slightly different route!)

Ridiculous Fishing (where you fish, throw those fish in the air and then blast them out of the air!)

And Super Crate Box (crates = guns = carnage)

[Incubated Film] Free Screening of Indie Game: The Movie - June 6th @ Hall of Fame, Tilburg

New Post has been published on http://inlog.org/2013/05/31/incubated-film-free-screening-of-indie-game-the-movie-june-6th-hall-of-fame-tilburg/

[Incubated Film] Free Screening of Indie Game: The Movie - June 6th @ Hall of Fame, Tilburg

The game industry has seen some interesting changes over the past years. With the introduction of digital distribution systems on consoles, independent game developers have found new ways to get into contact with an audience previously inaccessible. In a billion dollar industry where taking risks is not the norm, these independent developers have been able to create some of the most interesting and innovative games of the past years, sparking a unforeseen interest in strangely unique games that were thought commercially uninteresting by big developers.

And to celebrate and encourage these developments in the game industry, and the independent developers who are pushing the boundaries of gaming as a legitimate art form, we will be screening Indie Game: The Movie in The Hall of Fame.

Indie Game: The Movie (Lisanne Pajot & James Swirsky) focuses on the underdogs of the video game industry: the independent game developers. They sacrifice money, health and sanity to realize their lifelong dream of developing their own indie game. These are the struggling artists of the 21st century, creating from their own artistic visions, refusing to work for the major developers. This is truly DIY: independently conceive, design, program and release your own game.

In Indie Game: The Movie we follow some young indie game developers during the creation and (hopefully) release of their games Super Meat Boy, Fez and Braid.

This Sundance award winning documentary takes you along on the emotional rollercoaster of these obsessive artists, capturing the tension and drama of their quest to express themselves in this modern art form.

Exclusively for this edition of Incubated Film, the Hall of Fame will be transformed into a gamer paradise, with possibility to play on the big screen!

Doors open at 20:00h and film starts rolling at 20:30h. Like always admittance is 0,00 euro’s. Also welcoming you to the screening will be the sound of freshly made popcorn that is also totally free.

Strolling along with Purling Hiss at Area51

New Post has been published on http://inlog.org/2013/05/24/strolling-along-with-purling-hiss-at-area51/

Strolling along with Purling Hiss at Area51

After seeing Thee Oh Sees nearly destroy Area51 last week I was glad to see the place still standing. What were we to do without our regular supplier of garage bands? Luckily the skatepark/venue was still where it ought to be, this evening containing Purling Hiss and Richie Dagger.

After 10 minutes spent judging the skaters from a safe distance -one of the more entertaining things to do in Area51- growling guitars announce the entrance of Richie Dagger. Hailing from Tilburg, these guys take cues from stoner-rock bands bands like QOTSA (I trust you know the abbreviation). With enough gain on the guitars to make my girly chest spontaneously sprout hairs and with enough pleasing melodies to make the -more hairy- men suddenly develop feelings, Richie Dagger make what we would call “spierballen rock”(muscle-rock?). The set is short, strong and the crowd, which is pleasantly big enough, really enjoyed it.

When men with beards sing about feelings we tend to trust them.

While contemplating a trip to 040, the adjacent BMX park, Purling Hiss suddenly start their set. Seeing people hurl each other across the air will have to wait for another day, time to go see bands play.
Purling Hiss often get compared to Dinosaur Jr. which is probably a fair comparison. Mellow rock tunes with a vocal drawl making stray observations on day to day life. The first two songs are perfectly adequate, but when they play the first strokes of “Mercury Retrograde” they really have my attention.
In the middle of that song there there is this very short guitar riff that Mike Polizze plays, and while he plays it he quickly hums along. It’s my favorite (tiny) part in music this year because it feels like something that was done for shits and giggles during repetitions, but was left in because it sounds fun. Which is what the rest of the set enforces. Fun. No heavy theme’s or lyrics. No time for deep reflection on the state of the world. Just strolling along, singing “I don’t know” -preferably on a sunny day. In this regard I got a strong Kurt Vile feel. Everything’s cool man.
But with their last songs Purling Hiss prove that, at the end of the day, every man wants to rock out and scream. For all that strolling along we have been doing, we also want to run and dropkick something in the chest. When they play “Lolita“, the opener to their latest album “Water on Mars”,  we could just as well have been watching Nirvana. Suddenly it’s all anxiety and screaming. A song which is also perfect to show of Mike Polizze’s -pretty gifted- guitar shredding abilities. A nice contrast to the mellow songs, and a fine conclusion to what was a perfectly cozy, and entertaining show.

Other observations:

-Richie Dagger’s vocalist looks a bit like Davos Seaworth, from Game of Thrones

-Richie Dagger’s drummer isn’t wearing a t-shirt during the set, which adds to the overall masculinity of the performance

-Purling Hiss’ drummer looks like a B-movie drugs dealer with those glasses (which he apparently wears all the time). Cool.

-The kid in the audience, who is way too good at skateboarding for his age, is old enough to drink and is obviously enjoying himself very well. Of all the people in the venue he seems to be enjoying the music the most. Or the beer.

[Incu Thursday] Múm, And So I Watch You From Afar, Doom + many more added for Incu '13

New Post has been published on http://inlog.org/2013/05/23/incu-thursday-mum-and-so-i-watch-you-from-afar-doom-many-more-added-for-incu-13/

[Incu Thursday] Múm, And So I Watch You From Afar, Doom + many more added for Incu ‘13

Somehow our bookers have managed to add another 19 names to our rapidly expanding Incu ’13 line-up. If your feeling a little overwhelmed by the amount of names, don’t  worry, we are still busy discovering new favorites ourselves. For this Thursday we have some artists you may know, and some that are probably new to you. Enough to discover! Here are the newly confirmed artists:

Today’s 19 additions:

Múm

And So I Watch You From Afar

DOOM

Barn Owl

White Hills

The Revival Hour

Ghédalia Tazartès

Poltergeist

Giant Drag

Ed schrader’s music beat

Evan Caminiti

Jon Porras

Fat White Family

Foton Kuşağı

Age Of Agony

Abysmal Darkening

Viscera///

Razoreater

Darkshaft

Even though that picture up there is very tropical, Múm are pretty Icelandic, something you can hear very well. Wonderful, intricate post-rock that fills you with a childlike sense of wonder at how pretty things can be. Enough blasting-out-of-skin material this Incubate, but And So I Watch You From Afar bring a specific kind math-rock violence which we are very happy to welcome to Tilburg. Don’t be confused but Doom is a crust/punk band. Actually, no time for confusion because the 90 second long, song-onslaught will require all your attention. If you want to take more time for a song Barn Owl will provide ambient drones in their most apocalyptic forms.

Other acts in include psychedelic drone band White Hills, experimental pop-band The Revival Hour, cult extravaganza Ghédalia Tazartès, instrumental trio Poltergeist  (with ex-Echo and the Bunnymen), decadent pop/grunge with super front-woman Giant Drag, paranoid punk-pop Ed Schrader’s Music Beat, ambient-drone Evan Caminiti and Jon Porras (both Barn Owl members), demented slackers garage band Fat White Family, Turkish indie-rock band Foton Kuşağı, extreme 90′s thrash-metal reunion of Tilburg finest Age of Agony, doom doom dooooom metal Abysmal Darkening, Psych post-rock, experimental post-metal, lo-fi doom (catch breath…) band Viscera///,  aggressive hardcore band Razoreater and crazy rock ‘n roll/hardcore duo Darkshaft. It’s starting to look like a whole, exciting merry bunch of artists!
That makes 155 artists now confirmed for the Incubate week in September! For audio previews of (almost) all confirmed artists, check out our brand new website on www.incubate.org or the Incubate 2013 Spotify playlist.

[Win] 3 x 2 tickets for Animal Collective - 27th of May @ Melkweg, Amsterdam

One of the most popular indie bands of the last couple years is playing in Amsterdam. We’re talking about Animal Collective of course, the band that proved that strange, mind-fuckery music can be commercially successful and popular with a big audience…

…and our friends at the Melkweg are letting us give away 3 x 2 tickets for their show, and support Laurel Halo, on 27th of May in Amsterdam.

To win the tickets you’ll need to answer the following “question”.

What’s your favorite collection of Animals and what kind of shenanigans would they be up to?

Send your  bunch of animals and their shenanigans to win@incubate.org with subjectline “ANIMAL COLLECTIVE” and don’t forget to clearly state your full name in the mail. Make sure to send it before before Wednesday, the 22nd of May.

Thee Oh Sees in Area51 were supercool and fantastically amazing

New Post has been published on http://inlog.org/2013/05/21/thee-oh-sees-in-area51-were-supercool-and-fantastically-amazing/

Thee Oh Sees in Area51 were supercool and fantastically amazing

It’s been five days since I saw Thee Oh Sees play in Area51, which by internet rules is waaaay too long to still write anything about it. Now, i’m making the brave choice to still write something about it. For three reasons. 1. I’ve become too much of a musicsnob (for my taste) 2. Area51 is fantastic 3. Thee Oh Sees were fantastic.

1. Let me explain. Since I started interning at Incubate I’ve come into contact with people who have been working in the music industry for some time. While these people are probably the biggest music fans in the world, they are also capable of instantly -and viciously- decimating a band for a variety of -sometimes elitist- reasons.  There are no people in the world capable of the intense hatred (or even worse, casual disinterest) for music -than people who love music. The discussions about whether certain music is good or not so good/terrible -while constructive and important- tend to be about a lot of things, except whether you actually enjoy music.
Bands like Thee Oh Sees, or at least one of their live show, ascend silly discussions on whether music is good or not.

Proof: This picture.

Do these people look like they care whether some band did this earlier in the 70′s ? No. Moronic smiles all around.

2. Second reason why I still want to write about the show: Area51 is simply one of the best venue’s in the southern parts of Netherlands -especially to go see a garage/dirty/intense band. The more clinical and (sometimes atmosphere lacking) pop-stages in the Netherlands just don’t have the grime necessary to complement the grime the bands take with them. One other thing, Area51 is just on the right side of hostile looking (is there a guy with a shiv in the corner, probably) and somehow it is just more inviting to throw yourself into other people when there is no fear of breaking something (or being shivved). These things also applied to last Friday, when we walked into a well-packed hall (which was already rife with sweat and an inviting humidity), where Thee Oh Sees found themselves in a ready made bed, perfect for a nice tussle with a willing audience.

3. Which brings us to the last reason why I’m still writing about Thee Oh Sees (and why I picked such a silly title for this piece). Thee Oh Sees were simply amazing. A violent firestorm of fuzzy riffs, dirty aggressive songs and high screeching vocals. The moment Dwyer and band stepped on stage they said one thing: “Can we play already? Do we need to sound check?”. No. No, they didn’t need to.
It takes them two songs (which already included a broken string) to completely tear up the first few meters of people. When they play “I Come From The Mountain” someone has fired the imaginary starting pistol. With almost moronic grins on their faces people hurdle themselves into the violent -but pleasantly friendly- mosh pit. Smiles on the band. Smiles on the girl who nearly gets trampled. Smiles on the people who are being thrown into the walls. Smiles all around.
And then suddenly, about an hour and a half later, it’s over. Their encore, “Minotaur” is the slowest song in the set, while everyone is still ready to go. A strange, but almost romantic goodbye to an audience that has been violently abused and has taken everything with a thank you and a smile on their face.

To get back to my three reasons: Perhaps Thee Oh Sees is the most derivative band that ever was, perhaps there are better venues and perhaps a bunch of drunken kids jumping around on some fast music is nothing new. But on that Friday, in Area51, all I saw were very happy, and very tired faces.

Oh, and reading this review by Kicking the Habit, Thee Oh Sees did the very same thing a day later on LeGuessWho. Those devils.

[Go See] PVT - 21st of May @ 013, Tilburg

[Go See] PVT - 21st of May @ 013, Tilburg

Fans of experimental rock pay attention because tomorrow PVT will play in 013, Tilburg. This art-rock band for London and Sydney are familiar faces seeing as they played Playground Festival in 2010 and left quite the impression.

PVT make experimental rock with a healthy dose of electronics. Since their forced name change back in 2010 (for legal reasons) the band has only improved on their sound, and last January’s “Home Sapiens” (their third studio album) is an impressive collection of songs with a surprising attention for vocals. For fans of Battles, Holy Fuck and Animal Collective.

PVT is playing tomorrow, 20:30h in 013, Tilburg.

[Heavy Sunday] Heart In Hand

New Post has been published on http://inlog.org/2013/05/19/heavy-sunday-heart-in-hand/

[Heavy Sunday] Heart In Hand

One of UK’s greatest melodic hardcore bands, Heart In Hand recently released their new, anticipated album ‘Almost There’. They have recently shot a music video for their main single ‘Almost There’.

Heart In Hand is a band I’ve been following since their birth. Over the years they’ve grown as a band and eventually found their own, original sound. Their sound is something you have to experience. Vocalist Charlie Holmes portrays his deep lyrics in such an emotional way you feel his pain and frustrations as they were your own. Melody wise this band is something you’ve never experienced. So go have a listen and judge for yourself.

[Friday Afternoon Silliness] Terrible Trap Songs (mutilating songs you used to love)

[Friday Afternoon Silliness] Terrible Trap Songs (mutilating songs you used to love)

Trap is all the rage these days, sparking internet memes and making tiny white kids seem cooler by proxy. But as we all know, when a “new” genre comes to town -brandishing legitimately interesting music- people hurdle over each other to take that “new” genre and paste it on everything in sight… and it is terrifying.

This all started during the traditional Friday afternoon fries lunch (lunch feat. fries) when I remarked that I kind of liked Trap. TNGHT is alright in my book. Well, this didn’t sit very well with the older, more seasoned people at Incubate HQ. The following hours Joost Heijthuijsen set out to dig up some of the worst trap songs he could find, and subsequently ruined the entire genre for me (almost).

Here are the most excruciatingly cheesy and awful Trap songs he could find:

Lumineers Trap

Marilyn Manson Trap

AC/DC Trap

Bon Jovi Trap

Metellica Trap

Ozzy Osbourne Trap

Justin Timberlake Trap

Some things are not meant to be mixed.

Yes, you can win tickets for Purling Hiss, the dirty, lo-fi garage rockers straight outta Philidelphia, US. Support will be provided by Tilburg’s finest, Richie Dagger. To win the tickets you’ll need to answer the following “question”.

Purling Hiss sounds pretty sensual. What do you think it means? Let us know.

Our new booker went to see Hessian @ De Kreun, Kortrijk

New Post has been published on http://inlog.org/2013/05/17/our-new-booker-went-to-see-hessian-de-kreun-kortrijk/

Our new booker went to see Hessian @ De Kreun, Kortrijk

Our new assistant booker Jan Vrijens -from Brussels, Belgium- has already booked a couple of artists for upcoming Incubate, but his very first booking was the intense hardcore/black-metal/doom band Hessian. However, since Hessian was a Belgium band and we smelt some nepotism,  we let Jan go see Hessian live to see if they held up to our rigorous standards…

The four-piece of Hessian enters the stage in-between Iroha and Godflesh. They’ll have to shake the crowd awake  after a somewhat sluggish performance of the first band. One minute into the show and we are most certainly awake. Their metallic hardcore is so heavy and in-your-face that it doesn’t allow wandering thoughts.

Their recently released album Mànégarmr (Southern Lord Records) combines vintage hardcore with crust, black metal and doom. This mixture is a direct consequence of the line-up of the band: singer Bram Coussement earned his stripes in old-school H8000 hardcore band Losing Streak, Tim Bryon plays drums in The Black Heart Rebellion (also playing this years’ Incubate festival), and guitarist Seynaeve recently joined Belgian sludge gods Amenra. Live, this translates into one massive sound of screaming vocals, raging drums and blackened riffs backed up by the swampy bass of Kenneth Vanhoutte. They change in pace and style so fast that it makes it difficult to dance to -really- but all of this is brought with so much passion and craftsmanship that it can’t leave you untouched. Coussement looks for the interaction with the public, but you can tell that, with his roots in hardcore, he rather would have been doing his thing in the crowd than up on stage. If it wasn’t for the row of photographers, he would have probably jumped in. When Seynaeve takes over the vocals, we get a more repetitive song, kicking in slower but with the same result: devastation. In a short but fast show, Hessian convinced me and, judging from the reactions, a large part of the crowd that they are a band to keep an eye on. One of Belgian’s stars on the rise!

Snowstar reissues I Am Oak's debut + special show at LeGuessWho

Snowstar reissues I Am Oak’s debut + special show at LeGuessWho

About a month ago Snowstar turned 10 years old. Over those ten years the Utrecht based indielabel has acquainted us with a variety of great artist and probably the most successful of those artists, I Am Oak, is now reissuing their fantastic debutalbum “On Claws”.

The album -that garnered a lot of praise back in 2010- was in due need for a reissue, seeing as that it had sold out a while back. Not that this great album full of melancholic folks song needs any justification for a reissue, but the addition of ‘Gold and Porcelain’ and ‘Oakestra’, two bonus songs that didn’t make an appearance on the original debut, are very welcome sight. Download the album here.

Snowstar is also organizing a special show during LeGuessWho in Utrecht, in the newly opened Kapitaal, where I Am Oak and The Future’s Dust will play. Herrek will play a “Herrek’s Favorites” show together with Lukas Dikker (LUIK). If you can make time in your insanely buse schedule during LGW, we implore you to go check it out. Attend here.

Listen to “On Claws” reissue below. The album is in stores on June 1st.

[Incu Thursday] 13 new artists confirmed for Incubate 13'

[Incu Thursday] 13 new artists confirmed for Incubate 13’

In our mind the weekend begins on Thursday. Why? Because Thursday = Incu Thursday = new names for Incubate 2013! Last week we added Clock DVA, T.A.G.C. and Shonen Knife to the line-up and today we are happy to announce 13 more artists.

The 13 additions are:

A Place To Bury Strangers
Neil Halstead
Wolf Eyes
Stare Case
Henry & Hazel Slaughter
Regression
Crazy Jim
Hooded Fang
Black Pus
Man Forever
Stranded Horse
Ice, Sea, Dead People
Dinner

We are very happy to announce that A Place To Bury Strangers (photo) will be joining us in September to play their crushing, yet strangely beautiful shoe-gaze. If that isn’t loud enough for you, we also have noiselegends Wolf Eyes who’ll give an absolutely obliterating live show. For the more delicate souls we have Neil Halstead, ex-member of legendary shoegaze band Slowdive, who’ll come over to play his beautiful folk and, subsequently, break our heart in two.

But there is more. All members of Wolf Eyes will play one of their numerous side projects: Stare Case (Nate Young and John Olson), Henry & Hazel Slaughter (John Olson), Regression (Nate Young) and Crazy Jim (Jim Baljo) will give the Incubate visitor ample opportunity to go see some eclectic, experimental and -sometimes confusing- noise performances. Five times Wolf Eyes!

That leaves 6 more names: Catchy garage/surf by Hooded Fang, experimental drum-performance by Man Forever, noisy and aggressive drum-punk by Black Pus (side project from Lightning Bolt), delicate folk on rare instruments by Stranded Horse, angular post-punk by Ice, Sea, Dead People and the amazing dancer/darkwave performer Dinner.

That makes 136 artists now confirmed for the Incubate week in September! For audio previews of (almost) all confirmed artists, check out our brand new website on www.incubate.org or the Incubate 2013 Spotify playlist.

Tune in next week for another Incu Thursday!

[Listen] Kyle Hall's debut "The Boat Party"

[Listen] Kyle Hall’s debut “The Boat Party”

He’s Kyle Hall, or Kyle motherfucking Hall for the ladies, and he’s one of the most promising producers from Detroit. After 6 years of numerous Ep releases and collaborations (he was 15 when he debuted his first EP) the Detroit producer finally released his debut album “The Boat Party“; and it’s an absolute banger.

Mixing soulful, funky, and organic feels, with metallic, robotic sounding tracks the album is a reflection of everything Detroit. Soul and groove combined with rust and steel. The title is meant to juxtapose the bleak and desolate environment of modern Detroit with the decadent, ultra-hip dance parties that take place on boats in places like Florida and Cannes. Just look at that cover, does that look like a boat party to you? (we’d rather go to that one actually). The album got a 4 out of 5 on Resident Advisor and we really implore you to go listen to the record.

And after that throw some money over the internet to own it on sweet, sweet vinyl. Buy it here.

Kyle Hall will play Incubate on Friday, 20th of September.

Listen below for two fantastic songs from “The Boat Party”.

And this one is just irresistibly groovy

Inside Out: Mother's day was a huge success

Inside Out: Mother’s day was a huge success

Last Sunday we were able to give some mothers the best Mother’s Day present ever: A giant portret of themselves that was lost (but now found)! Last year the inner city of Tilburg was invaded by portrets of mothers when Incubate got the epic art-project Inside Out, by French artist JR, into town. Because of logistic problems not all posters could be shown at that time. But last Sunday the mothers, who were taken hostage by customs for unknown reasons, were finally back!

A lot of people took the time to come to the Koepelhal to walk past the rows and rows of giant mother heads to find the one that matched his or hers mother (or their own face of course). Of the 650 portrets we were able to rejoin 400(!) with their legitimate owner. Just realizing how many living rooms now grace a larger than life version of their owners has made this reunion of mothers a great success.

Thank you to all who’ve shown up to come reclaim their mothers; a big thanks to the volunteers who helped this a smooth operation and thanks to Famke van den Berg for organizing the whole thing.

[Incubated] Shigeto replaces Nightlands for upcoming Incubated

Three weeks ago we sadly had to announce that Nightlands canceled his June 19th show. Luckily we have found a great replacement in the form of Shigeto. This electronic music producer from Detroit makes ambient glitch-hop reminiscent of Flying Lotus and Four Tet. During his Incubated show he will complement his intricate electronic sound-scapes with live drums and will close the evening after Idiot Glee and Nissenenmondai.

But… you can get an early listen for this Canadian lo-fi garage pop, because they JUST premiered their new album on Hype Machine. Well if the first single was any indication it’s gonna be another (maybe a bit more aggressive) album full of catchy songs. Excited!

[Reminder] Inside Out Mother’s Day: come reclaim your mothers!

Not only will the 650 ‘lost’ mothers finally be shown to the public, the rightful owners can also take the posters home; an unique chance to own a original JR!

So drop by and take your mom with you (literally of figuratively).

THIS SUNDAY, May 12th, 2013 between 12.00h and 17.00h.

Koepelhal – Spoorzone Tilburg

NS-Plein 3

5014 DA Tilburg

[Disclaimer: Only the mom’s who were not shown in September last year will be exhibited. Taking a poster is only possible upon showing the original (your mom or the sent in photo) and only on May 12th. ]

[Listen] New RA podcast from Kyle Hall + Levon Vincent mix

The weather outside is too nice for our tastes. Damn the sun. We want to crawl into a nice dark hole and dance until it’s September. Lucky for us Kyle Hall, the Detroit Techno wunderkind released his fantastic debut album “The Boat Party“ on his own label last week, and now he has also dropped a podcast on Resident Advisor. Listen to it here (you do need to make and account to be able to download the podcast).

And while we’re at it, here is a recent ( well recent… January… sue us) mix by Levon Vincent if your in the mood for a proper warehouse set. Listen to it here.

[Go See] Vice Festival Guide launch party @ Hall of Fame, Tilburg

[Go See] Vice Festival Guide launch party @ Hall of Fame, Tilburg

Vice -the international magazine for art, music and culture- is celebrating the release of their 2013 festival guide. Their yearly festival aphrodisiac (for as far as we’ll ever need something to get us enthusiastic for festivals) will be released in four Dutch cities, and our beautiful Tilburg has the honor to be first at bat.

On May 16th the Hall of Fame will see the release of the magazine full of interviews, do’s and don’ts, articles and the sharp observations Vice is known for. And although the festival guide is a good precursor to the festival madness that is bound to come, Vice is also giving us a good reason to flail our arms and drink beverages this very evening.

Reasons to 1. flail arms and 2. drink: Letherette from the UK; our very own local/not very local anymore hero Jameszoo; Flamboyant and Cintasoul will spin a home game and Hollywood & Vine will demonstrate how to apply soft-sex to italo, chicago, wave and disco.

To attend the party you’ll just need 2 minutes of your time to apply and then some good luck to be one of the people who’ll win the random lottery. You can apply for a ticket here. Oh, and let your facebook friends know you’re going.

If you miss this party there will be three more in Amsterdam, Eindhoven and Utrecht.

[Watch] Rummelsnuff's hilarious new video: Bratwurstzange

[Watch] Rummelsnuff’s hilarious new video: Bratwurstzange

Our favorite German bodybuilder bouncer is back! Rummelsnuff is celebrating German Father’s Day by letting us know that real men do not use their tongs or other instruments to roll their sausage on the barbeque. Silly us.

The video features some of Rummelsnuffs trademarks uber-masculinity; a girl in irresponsibly little clothing for barbecuing (ever heard of flying grease?); making out with said girl while the rest watches; and some playful gut-punching to remind us of their impeccably toned muscles.

Watch below (seriously, watch)

Oh, and just look at that flyer.

[Heavy Sunday] This Concept

[Heavy Sunday] This Concept

Cardiff’s very own This Concept released their music video for the song ‘Foundations’ on the 2nd may. I’m glad I push the play button on Youtube once in a while, If not I wouldn’t have discovered these guys. Damn, this is some catchy stuff.

If you’re into melodic metal and hardcore this is certainly something for you. It’s the perfect blend of heavy music and emotional, touching lyrics. Their vocalist really gets me in some parts of the song. ‘Foundations’ intro, for example, starts with a mellow melody setting the tone for the vocalist to take the lead. Screaming “I will always build my foundations, Deeper and deeper to support myself from falling” will send shivers down your spine.

Peter Meeuwsen's tips for SOTU Festival

New Post has been published on http://inlog.org/2013/05/01/peter-meeuwsens-tips-for-sotu-festival/

Peter Meeuwsen’s tips for SOTU Festival

Incubate booker Peter Meeuwsen has tipped three bands you should go see at SOTU Festival, which is taking place next week in Amsterdam. Here are his three tips

Fawn Spots
Write catchy but very fuzzy punk rock songs. They were chosen by the legendary John Robb to play at Incubate last year, being a band who have never played outside of their hometown before at that time. They released a seven inch on Robb’s label and a very good split-LP with Cumstain some time later.

The KVB

I fell in love with the band Die Jungen, and it turned out Klaus von Barrel (KVB) was the man responsible for this band and so I also discovered The KVB. This cold-wave / post-punk band sounds as retromaniac (record collector rock) as their peers Moon Duo and The Soft Moon, but also as carefully crafted as these bands. Comes very recommended.

Albatre

It’s the heydays of jazzcore in the Netherlands with great bands like Dead Neanderthals, Cactus Truck, Heinz Karlhausen & The Diatonics and Albatre. I haven’t seen Albatre live (sharing members with Heinz Karlhausen) yet, but i heard they are INCREDIBLY LOUD!

SOTU is a five day festival in Amsterdam, which is happening 5, 9, 10, 11, 12 May 2013 in a collaboration between venues OCCII, OT301 and Vondelbunker. Besides Peter’s three tips will also play:

Alexandros Papamarkou, Albatre, Baba Electronica, Bardo Frings, Beijing Bubbles, Botfly & Holzkopf Duo, Bushdoof, Cairo Liberation Front,Chocolat Billy, Coen Oscar Polack & Herman Wilken, Damcase, Dennis Tyfus, Devilman, Die Munch Machine, DIT, DJ Gingermoon, DJ Marcelle,DU013, EKE, Fawn Spots, Filosofische Stilte, Fine China Superbone,G∆RTM∆LEN, Homemade Empire, Hunter Complex, Hysteryland 2, J.C.
